Description

Rörstrand, Sweden annual Christmas Plate 1971 – Jultallrik 1971. Number 4 in the series. The 1971 edition continues the Nils Holgersson series with “Nils i Lappland” / “Nils in Lapland”. The motif has been fetched from “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils” by the famous Swedish novelist Selma Lagerlöf. Limited edition. Ø ca 19,5 cm / approx. 7.6 inches. Design: Gunnar Nylund. Made in Sweden.

Lapps and reindeer were also coming down from the mountains.
They came wandering in an orderly fashion: One lapp
at the head of the procession and then the herd
with the big bulls in the front rank,
then a row of pack reindeer which
carried the lapps’ tent and their belongings,
and in the rear seven or eight people.

That is how Nils Holgersson experienced Lapland in Selma Lagerlöf’s much appreciated story “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils” (1906-07). Lapland is actually a whole region in the north of Europe stretching from the north of Norway’s Atlantic coast over Sweden, Finland and the White Sea in Russia. Here live and work the lapps or, as they rather call themselves the Laplanders, the remnant of a people with a long history. The 1971 Christmas Plate depicts the Lapp with his traditional surroundings the reindeer, the sledge and the cot. Arctic raspberries circle the rim of the plate together with the sheaf of a rare flower which grows in the very north of Sweden.

The plate has never been displayed and comes in perfect condition with original box. The box may show some wear due to age.
