Description

Internationally famous Gustavsberg, Sweden, the only remaining Swedish porcelain manufacturer still manufacturing bone china and stoneware in the factory situated in the vicinity of Stockholm, Sweden since 1825, made this series of Stockholm sceneries for the Stockholmsgillet (i.e. the Stockholm Guild). The Series was made in an annual limited edition of which some were a First Day issue with gold stamp, the others a “standard” version. They were sold at the traditional Christmas market at Stortorget in the Gamla Stan / Old Town, Stockholm.

This plate – Julen 1976 / Christmas 1976 – is number 4 in the Series. It is called Skridskobana i Humlegården / Skating Rink in Humlegarden. The picture from 1869 depicts the garden Humlegården, still a major park in central part of Stockholm, after an original by A. G. Hafström, adapted by Sven Jonsson. Men and women are skating in the south-east corner of the park, and we see the Hedvig Eleonora Church in the background.

The plate is made of bone china in a limited edition of 3000 pieces. This is the First Day Edition of 800 pieces, and it has the famous Gustavsberg anchor logotype as well as the first day stamp in gold. Ø ca 22 cm / approx. 8,5 inches. A sticker with the date of the purchase at Stortorgets Christmas Market and Sven Jonsson’s signature is attached to the backside. The plate has never been displayed. The front is in excellent condition, the backside has some chip-like holes in the bone china glaze, due to the manufacturing process. (I notice this on all Gustavsberg’s plates.) It comes with the original box and a suspension device inside box. These plates are genuine Stockholmiana.

Made in Sweden.
