Description
Rörstrand, Sweden annual Christmas Plate 1983 – Jultallrik 1983. Number 16 in the series. The 1983 edition continues the Nils Holgersson series with “Nils on Öland”. The motif has been fetched from “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils” by the famous Swedish novelist Selma Lagerlöf. Limited edition. Ø ca 19,5 cm / approx. 7.6 inches. Design: Gunnar Nylund. Made in Sweden.
Nils Holgersson has come to Öland (Oland) now. Öland is the second largest island in Sweden and also one of the historical provinces. Nils is sitting on the plinth of one of the many windmills which are to be found all over the island. In the background are the ruins of Borgholm Castle which dates from 1569. Kalmar Castle (on the Swedish mainland, which is on the other side of the Kalmar Strait) is here visible on the other side of the water, and is somewhat older than Borgholm Castle. The stag in the foreground is a later descendant of the herd that King Charles X Gustavus (Karl X Gustaf) introduced into Ottenby grove in 1653. The flower for the province of Öland, rock-rose (Solvända), can be seen in the border.
The plate has never been displayed and comes in perfect condition with original box. The box may show some wear due to age.
